Avery's Thoughts on the Process
In English, Mrs. Buhrley gave us each $10 to make a change in our communities. Paige and I decided to work together to complete the project. Paige’s mom knew a friend, who worked for a title-one school that couldn’t afford many books. Thus, we knew we would use this opportunity to make a change in the community. We chose that a book drive would be most useful and fun for both us and the participating schools.
As I worked on the conflict, I discovered that I take so many books for granted. I absolutely love to read books, and I couldn’t imagine a world without my favorite- but expensive- books to cuddle up with. I realized that it was really important that students should have books to read, and I actually started to share my books with friends at school. Reading is a basic skill that you need to succeed, and without reading material for schools and children, how can they succeed and grow? The bottom line is that they can’t and so we wanted to help. We first emailed principals and tried to get as many sponsors and donations as we could to provide prizes. These prizes would influence the students and parents to donate books. On Monday, we raced through the schools, putting up flyers and posters, while also interviewing teachers, making sure to get video and pictures along the way. By the end of the week, we will have books to give to the schools, and reward all those who participated with gift cards and a raffle.
While preparing to hang up posters and flyers at school, we didn’t have enough time, so we did have to sacrifice a class period to make sure that we were all put together. We also had to staple flyers to paper bags and give them to all the teachers at the elementary schools. We were just very afraid that we forgot something. For the future, I would have liked to have a written or typed plan of exact times and what was needed. But, I believe that we did a fantastic job!
My project relates to the theme of Making a Difference because we will help a school that not only can’t afford books, but we’ll also be encouraging other people to help and make a difference. We’ll be giving plenty of books, so their students can read and grow. Our participators will also learn to help others and care about other people.

Paige's Thoughts on the Process
My name is Paige Topham. I am a 7th grader from Alpine, UT. My english teacher, Mrs. Buhrley gave each of us $10 and asked us to do the most good with it. I am doing this book drive because my mom’s friend is always asking for school supplies, and books. She is a teacher at a Title One School and they are in need of these things that seem so simple but, are the basics.
When I started this project, I thought that I could donate all of these books to the library but, after talking to schools they said that all of the library books are tripple bound and that would cost money. Instead we are donating the books to the classrooms and the money will go to the library and also the classrooms instead.
One problem we encountered was figuring out which schools to donate the books to. There are so many Title One schools in our area that need help that we couldn’t figure out which one to do. In the end we ended up making about 20 calls and found the schools most in need.
This relates to making a difference because we are helping these kids who don’t have enough books or even money for books. We are going to give them the opprotunity to do what I love most, reading. Reading enhances your mind, knowledge, and it takes it places you will never go.
